This home, designed by Charles Dilbeck in 1938, was built on a lot that was at the time out in the country, but is now at the corner of a very busy intersection. The client’s primary landscape design requirements were security, screening the adjacent street, and masking the traffic noise. Because on-street parking is impossible, the gravel driveway was expanded to create a motor court, which could accommodate six cars. A short brick wall runs the width of the lot and borrows architectural details from the home. A new high-tech automated gate was installed, but the classic arch design and wood inset details complement the style of the house. The rear yard design includes a new swimming pool and spa, as well as several water features, which help muffle the traffic noise. The pool is set on axis with the living room and is adjacent to a generous stone terrace. A brick sculpture pedestal occurs opposite the spa and features a waterfall, which spills into a basin that is connected to the pool. A variety of landscape plantings and a small lawn enhance the pool area.
