| Architect Robert Perry Johnson designed this exceptional example of American mid-century architecture for the Touchstone family in 1959, with a vision of a simple lifestyle inspired by a strong relationship to nature and light. Saved from the wrecking ball and meticulously restored by the Client, this splendid regionalist modern residence in Highland Park is framed by wonderful native oaks and organized around a central courtyard and four perimeter courtyards, creating a powerful relationship between interior and exterior spaces. Natural light and garden views to penetrate into each room, creating a powerful relationship between interior and exterior spaces. The landscape architect added the drama of water to magnify the experience of the interaction of light and space. Upon entering the residence, one is struck by the views of the central atrium and the side courtyard, now connected visually by water that seems to flow from a pool in the upper courtyard, under the “bridge” of the indoor hallway, and into a second pool in the lower courtyard. Limited and unified plant palettes in each courtyard compliment the serenity of the residence. In the rear yard, three interlocking gravel circles expose the dramatic root structure of the live oaks and provide additional space for entertaining under the dense canopies of the mature native tree.
